Starting January 1, 2021, in order to register and practice the profession, each psychologist, licensed under the Education Law, must complete 36 hours of CE from a Department approved provider during each triennial registration period.

Some regulations restrict licensees to a certain percentage of self-study for continuing education requirements. In response to the evolving situation with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), and for those licensees whose registrations are due to renew March 1, 2020 – January 1, 2022, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees to complete up to 100% of the continuing education as self-study, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession.

Self-study limitations – Self-study activities are provided through various media but do not allow the learner to contact the instructor in real-time with questions and/or comments. The Education Law and Commissioner’s Regulations allow a licensed psychologist to complete no more than one-third of the required hours as self-study in each registration period. This would translate to a limit of 12 hours for a typical 36-month registration period. For a registration period other than 36 months only one-third of the total hours may be self study.

3 of the 36 credits must be in ethics. We are currently working on an ethics course that meets NY state standards and hope to have that available by the end of September 2021. Please note that according to New York State, the ethic course is not needed during the phase in period.
