About the Course:

This course involves five attached articles that are devoted to the important interplay of alcohol and stress as related to: parenting, work, addiction, and stress reduction.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Alcohol and Stress created by Alcohol Research and Health in 1999.

This course is recommended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other human services and behavioral health professionals who seek knowledge about alcohol and stress. It is appropriate for participants with intermediate to advanced levels of knowledge about the topic.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the stress-response dampening effect of alcohol and the individual and situational factors that influence it.

  2. Be familiar with the three-way interaction among alcohol consumption, stress hormones production, and the aging process.

  3. Understand how experiencing a traumatic event may influence alcohol consumption.

  4. Identify the effects of stress on alcohol use.

  5. Recognize the important role of key neurochemicals in the alcohol-stress relationship.
