About the Course

This course explores relationships among abuse (both in childhood and adulthood), subsequent mental health problems, and substance use. The article presents statistics on the occurrence of these phenomena among Native women. It also describes a program with which the authors were involved (The Women’s Circle at the Native American Health Center), notes that culture can be a positive force in women’s lives, and suggests ways that other programs can assist clients who are facing violence and substance use problems.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Violence Against Native Women in Substance Abuse Treatment created by Saylors, Karen and Daliparthy, Nalini in 2006.

Course Creator

Recommended For:

This course is recommended for mental health professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about the relationship between violence, mental health issues, and substance use for women. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge. Because it focuses on American Indian/Alaska Native populations, it is especially helpful for those who have not worked extensively with these populations in the past and would like to gain background knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Learn about the relationships among violence (both in childhood and adulthood), subsequent mental health problems, and substance use - in the general population, among American Indian/Alaska Native women in particular, and in the sample studied by the authors
  2. Understand that rates of violence and abuse seem to be higher among American Indian/Alaska Native women than among the general population, although much less research has been done with these populations
  3. Recognize some causes of violence and abuse among American Indian/Alaska Native women.
  4. Learn how culture can be a positive force in women's lives.
