About the Course:

The so-called “club drug” MDMA continues to be used by millions of Americans despite evidence of its harmful effects. Myths abound about both the acute effects and long-term consequences of this drug, often called ecstasy or “X”. NIDA-supported research is developing a clearer picture of the potential dangers of MDMA. The material presented in this course summarizes the latest findings on MDMA, its abuse, and the consequences of its use.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about the abuse of the drug MDMA (Ecstasy). It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain what MDMA is, as well as the scope of its abuse in the United States.

  2. Describe the short and long-term effects of MDMA abuse, including what it does to the brain.

  3. Identify the ways in which MDMA can become addictive.

  4. Be able to apply what is known about preventing MDMA abuse.

  5. Become familiar with available treatments for MDMA abuse, as well as sources of additional information regarding scientific information on MDMA.
