About the Course

CADCA’s National Coalition Institute serves as a center for training, technical assistance, evaluation, research, and capacity building for community anti-drug coalitions throughout the United States. This primer is designed to provide anti-drug coalitions clear guidelines for defining their communities and assessing the real needs within the community.

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.
Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about analyzing community problems and setting goals. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the rationale for performing a community assessment.
  2. Explain the creation and maintenance of coalitions and partnerships and how best to assess community needs and resources.
  3. Describe the analysis of problems and goals and the development of a framework or model of change.
