About the Course:
This TIP embraces a fundamentally different way to conceptualize motivation. In this approach, motivation is viewed as a dynamic and changeable state rather than a static trait. This TIP shows how clinicians can influence this change process by developing a therapeutic relationship, one that respects and builds on the client’s autonomy and, at the same time, makes the treatment counselor a participant in the change process. This course addresses screening and assessment instruments. This course covers Appendix B only.
This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about screening and assessment issues related to motivation to change. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.
Explain screening and assessment instruments that relate to motivation, including the Alcohol and Drug Consequences Questionnaire (ADCQ), the Alcohol (and Illegal Drugs) Decisional Balance Scale, and the Alcohol Effects Questionnaire.
Describe the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire—III (Adult), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and Brief Situational Confidence Questionnaire (BSCQ).
Identify the characteristics and uses of the Personal Feedback Report, Readiness To Change Questionnaire (Treatment Version) (RCQ-TV), and the Situational Confidence Questionnaire (SCQ-39).
Discuss the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES), the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment Scale (URICA), and the What I Want From Treatment form.
