About the Course:

This publication presents clinical guidelines to help substance abuse treatment counselors address issues that arise from their clients’ status in the criminal justice system and to aid personnel in the criminal justice system in understanding and addressing the challenges of working with offenders with substance use disorders. This course covers Chapter 10 (adobe pages 237-257) of TIP 44 and addresses substance abuse treatment for offenders under community supervision.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Treatment for Offenders Under Community Supervision (TIP 44, Chapter 10): Substance Abuse Treatment for Adults in the Criminal Justice System created by SAMHSA in 2005.

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe the population of substance abuse clients under community supervision, and discuss treatment components and levels of supervision and treatment for this group.

  2. Identify the treatment services that can reasonably be provided for people under community supervision, and describe common treatment issues.

  3. Discuss treatment issues specific to people on parole and those specific to probationers, and explain strategies for improving system collaboration.
