About the Course:

Research consistently shows a high prevalence of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among persons with substance abuse problems who are in treatment. Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 50, Addressing Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Substance Abuse Treatment, is designed to assist in working with adult clients who may be suicidal. Information You Need to Know presents the “what” and “why” of working with clients with substance use disorders who have suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. It covers basic suggestions for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, background information about suicide and substance use disorders, including risk factors and warning signs , a four-step process for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors in substance abuse treatment, and a set of competencies counselors should incorporate to work effectively with clients who are suicidal.
