About the Course:

Legal and Ethical Issues (TIP 26, Appendix A: Substance Abuse Among Older Adults (TIP 26), presents treatment providers with much-needed information about a population that is underdiagnosed and underserved. This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about legal and ethical issues in the substance abuse treatment of older adults. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

  1. Discuss the interplay between the autonomy of older adult patients and the provider’s treatment mission.

  2. Describe federal and state laws regarding the privacy and confidentiality of substance abuse treatment records and discuss exceptions to the regulations.

  3. Identify strategies for dealing with common privacy- and confidentiality-related treatment situations.
