About the Course

This course examines the opioid epidemic in detail. It begins with identifying the scope of the problem. The report includes: trends in prescription opioid use and misuse, risk factors for prescription misuse and overdose, vulnerable populations, heroin use and its relation to prescription opioid use, illicit opioid markets, the current state of surveillance systems, recent developments in pharmaceutical treatment of opioid use disorder, trends in treatment of opioid overdose with naloxone, summary and recommendations.

This course is based on Chapter 4 of Trends in Opioid Use, Harms, and Treatment created by Richard J. Bonnie et al. in 2017.

Richard J. Bonnie is Harrison Foundation Professor of Medicine and Law and director of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. He has co-authored leading textbooks on criminal law and public health law and has devoted special attention during his career to public policies relating to mental health and substance abuse.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Recommended For:

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge. The content is at an intermediate level.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Acknowledge the scope of the opioid epidemic.
  2. Identify the causes, risk factors of users, and contributing outside factors.
  3. Summarize the pharmacotherapy interventions, OUD in pregnant women, and evidence-based treatment options.
