About the Course

Mothers with histories of alcohol and drug addiction have shown greater difficulty parenting young children than mothers with no history of substance misuse. This study was the second randomized clinical trial testing the efficacy of Mothering from the Inside Out (MIO), a 12-week mentalization-based individual therapy designed to address psychological deficits commonly associated with chronic substance use that also interfere with the capacity to parent young children

Nancy E. Suchman, PhD.
Dr. Suchman's last position was as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Child Study Center. Dr. Suchman’s research integrates perspectives from attachment theory, neuroscience of addiction and developmental psychopathology. Funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1995, her research has focused on developing and evaluating attachment-based parenting interventions for mothers with substance use and psychiatric disorders.
Cindy L. DeCoste, M.S.
Cindy L. DeCoste, MS, is a research associate in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. Since 2004, she has been the project director for Dr. Suchman’s research program focused on developing and evaluating attachment-based parenting interventions for mothers with substance use disorders. She has been involved in multiple aspects of the development, implementation, and evaluation of both the Mothering From the Inside Out mentalization-based parenting intervention and the psychoeducation comparison intervention. She is a clinical trainer and supervisor for counselors delivering the psychoeducation intervention, and she has expertise in methods for assessing child attachment, parent–child interactions, and parental representations and reflective functioning.
Thomas J. McMahon, PhD
Dr. McMahon is a Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Child Study. He is also the Program Director for the West Haven Mental Health Clinic at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. As a clinician, educator, and researcher, he is broadly interested in developmental perspectives on psychopathology and developmentally informed approaches to clinical intervention offered in community settings. Dr. McMahon has been the recipient of several grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to explore parenting as a treatment issue for men struggling with drug addiction; and he has been invited to participate in national and international initiatives designed to attenuate the impact of alcohol and drug addiction on family process and child development.

Hana Kuc is a Licensed Mental Heath counselor and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working in the field for 13 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor, therapist, educator and director. Hana has specialized in working with clients on medication assisted treatment, who are in recovery from opiates, and are also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.
