About the Course

This book is written both for supervisors and for supervisees in the human service and helping professions. The author uses his experience as a social worker and social work manager to help supervisors and supervisees understand the supervisory process, the pitfalls that are common to each role, and the tips and techniques that will help both parties make the most of their respective positions.

This course is not approved for FL Supervisors to use for Supervisor specific renewal.

Chris Beckett
Chris Beckett is a writer and educator, with a long professional career in social work as a supervisee, supervisor, and lecturer. He has taught Continuing Education and Professional Development courses on supervision for practitioners in several health care fields including social work, nursing, and occupational therapy. As a writer, Chris has authored textbooks for human services professionals, but also enjoys writing fiction. He has published eight novels and three short story collections.

Nora R. Balint, MS, NCC
Nora Balint, MS, NCC, received her degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and her National Certification in Counseling in 2002. Her volunteer and paid work in the counseling area has included creating and running parenting support groups (for birth through elementary aged children), work with the elderly, life coaching, support with the LGBTQ community, substance abuse groups, individual counseling, and technology consulting. Nora is currently a Post-Master's Fellow at The Refuge Center for Counseling in Franklin, Tennessee and is pursuing licensure as an LPC-MHSP.

Recommended For:

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between the two primary types of supervision, the components of each, the circumstances in which each is appropriate, and the typical issues that are unique to each type.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the supervisory cycle, the parties who are involved during each stage, and the behaviors or characteristics that are common when a supervisor or supervisee is stuck in a particular stage of the cycle.
  3. Identify the personal drivers and patterns of thinking and behaving which will contribute to your performance in the supervisory relationship.
  4. Name the games that supervisors and supervisees might play in the supervisory relationship, and the personal needs which are being met through these games.
  5. Predict some of the problems that might arise during a supervisory relationship, and generate strategies to avoid or rectify them.
